American Idiot

American Idiot to siódmy album studyjny amerykańskiej grupy punkrockowej Green Day. Produkcją zajął się Rob Cavallo, który od lat współpracuje z zespołem. W połowie 2003 roku, Green Day rozpoczął nagrywanie utworów na album o nazwie Cigarettes and Valentines, jednak z powodu kradzieży nagrań, zespół postanowił stworzyć nowy album, rezygnując z ponownego nagrywania Cigarettes and Valentines.

Grupa postanowiła stworzyć rock operę, czerpiąc inspirację z twórczości The Who oraz innych musicali. Tematyka albumu skupia się na życiu postaci Jezusa z Suburbia, stworzonej przez Billiego Joe Armstronga jako swoistego „antybohatera”. Wczesne nagrania miały miejsce w Studio 880 w Oakland, Kalifornia, a finalizacja albumu odbyła się w Ocean Way Recording w Hollywood.

Album American Idiot zadebiutował nakładem Reprise Records 20 września 2004 roku w Wielkiej Brytanii, a 21 września 2004 roku w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Odniósł ogromny sukces, zdobywając pierwsze miejsce na listach w 19 krajach, w tym w USA oraz Wielkiej Brytanii. Od momentu wydania, American Idiot sprzedał się w ponad 15 milionach egzemplarzy na całym świecie, z czego ponad 6 milionów w Stanach Zjednoczonych, co uczyniło go drugim najlepiej sprzedającym się albumem po Dookie. Album wydał pięć przebojowych singli, w tym międzynarodowe hity takie jak „American Idiot”, „Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, „Holiday”, „Wake Me Up When September Ends” oraz „Jesus of Suburbia”, które wszystkie uzyskały certyfikat Platinum od RIAA. American Idiot zdobył także nagrodę Grammy Award for Best Rock Album w 2005 roku, co czyni go pierwszym z dwóch albumów, które otrzymały tę nagrodę, drugim jest ósmy album zespołu 21st Century Breakdown, wydany w 2009 roku.
