Albert C.L.G. Günther

Albrecht Karl Ludwig Gotthilf Günther (Albert Charles Lewis Gotthilf Gunther), urodził się 3 października 1830 roku w Esslingen am Neckar, zmarł 1 lutego 1914 roku w Kew Gardens. Był brytyjskim zoologiem o niemieckich korzeniach.

Życiorys

Günther rozpoczął swoją edukację od studiowania teologii w Bonn i Berlinie, a później kontynuował naukę medycyny w Tybindze. W 1857 roku dołączył do British Museum, gdzie skupił się na ichtiologii. Po śmierci Johna Edwarda Graya w 1875 roku objął stanowisko kustosza zoologii w Muzeum Historii Naturalnej w Londynie, które zajmował do 1895 roku. Jego najważniejszym dziełem był ośmiotomowy Catalogue of Fishes (1859–1870). Oprócz ichtiologii, interesował się również herpetologią. W 1864 roku założył „Record of Zoological Literature”, w którym pracował jako redaktor przez następne sześć lat. W 1867 roku został członkiem Royal Society, a w latach 1875-76 pełnił funkcję wiceprzewodniczącego. W 1877 roku przyjął brytyjskie obywatelstwo, zmieniając swoje niemieckie imiona Carl Ludwig na brytyjskie: Charles Lewis. Jego synem był Robert Gunther (1869–1940), który był historykiem nauki.
