Adele Buffington, z domu Burgdorfer (urodzona 12 lutego 1900 w Saint Louis, zmarła 23 listopada 1973 w Woodland Hills) była amerykańską scenarzystką filmową. Napisała scenariusze do ponad 150 filmów, z których część powstała pod męskim pseudonimem – Jess Bowers.
Życiorys
W młodości pracowała przez trzy lata jako kasjerka w kinie, co umożliwiło jej zdobycie wiedzy o rzemiośle filmowym. Oglądała wiele filmów i uważnie obserwowała reakcje widowni. Po pracy spędzała czas w bibliotece, gdzie poszukiwała informacji potrzebnych do pisania swoich scenariuszy. Tworzyła głównie nocami.
Jej pierwszy scenariusz, zatytułowany La Petite, sprzedała w 1919 roku za 300 dolarów. W tym samym roku rozpoczęła pracę jako asystentka u Thomasa Ince’a.
W kolejnych latach zaczęła działać jako samodzielna scenarzystka, tworząc m.in. scenariusze do westernów. Znana była ze swojej wysokiej produktywności, jednak w ówczesnej prasie niewiele pisano na jej temat. Dodatkowo, jej rozpoznawalność była ograniczona przez fakt, że wiele filmów pisała pod męskim pseudonimem.
Po rewolucji dźwiękowej w kinie kontynuowała tworzenie scenariuszy. Ostatni film oparty na jej scenariuszu, The Bullwhip, został nakręcony w 1958 roku.
Była jedną z założycielek Gildii Scenarzystów (Screenwriters Guild).
